Dan,"a device that is increasing the voltage inside the unit" is probably nothing but a voltage multiplying rectifier. e-mail me and I'll send you a sample schematic if you're curious.
I don't think you can do a lot without that "major surgery" that is just installing a new power connector. However if you haven't decided if you're going to keep it I'd also recommend you to install a resistor in series with the new transformer's secondary.
Again, if you're curious I can send you schematic of my DAC's PS. But it's big, includes two separate boxes, three transformers and 5 rectifiers.Bye,
