Re: Upgraded PS for P-3A...Need Feedback.

207.225.89.26

Thanks Lesha, I am proceeding cautiously at this point as the unit is still new and under warranty. I will take a look and see if it is obvious how they are rectifying and splitting the voltages. The fact that it only draws 9V is also odd to me. Ric Schultz indicated to me that they may have a device that is increasing the voltage inside the unit...I wasn't real clear on how.

I have been very interested in the ACG designed SSPS PS. It utilizes a pair of split bobbin transformers and a symmetrical design utilizing mega-filtering and common mode chokes with Schottky diodes and LT regulators.

For now, the P-3A utilizes a mini female power jack +/- voltage, so unless I put the circuit board into a different case, I am not sure how to implement a DC PS with this unit without doing major surgery on the unit. For now, I think I will build a simple AC PS with the toroidal transformer which I believe to be of good quality and install a filtered IEC socket and ferrite bead filtering of the secondary AC leads. I believe this will provide some benefit and then I will pursue more radical changes to the unit after I have decided if I really want to keep it or not.

I love the sound of it in terms of clarity, but I can just tell that it really needs a better PS and increased filtering. I am also considering upgrading the PS filter caps - I would like to use Black Gates, but I just don't know if there is room inside. If I build an external PS, then I might be inclinded to use Black Gates there.

Thanks for the input. I primarily wanted to know if the toroidal transformer would be of benefit. I expect the AC filtering, upgraded transformer and shielded power cords should all improve the sound a noticeable amount.

I will post my findings.

Take care,

Dan W.
