Your wife as phase detector

It is not clear what EXACTLY your question was about, and I am not sure you got all the answers you were looking for.

Just in case you were asking about the relative polarity of two or more power outlets in your audio system room, or put differently, making sure all power comes from the same phase of the incoming power line (that may reduce the chance of hum in a system), you would need to either find out if all outlets are wired to the same side of the breaker panel by turning them off, one at a time, while having your wife scream "Still On, honey" or "Off now!", or do it yourself by using a voltmeter.

Use the AC meter and measure the voltage between the hot leads on two outlets. It is is close to zero, they are on the same phase. If you read 240V, these two outlets are on different phases and should not be used for parts of your stereo system.
