I listen with my back right up against the rear wall, and the speakers in the middle of the room, about 6.5 ft in front of me. According to Gerhard (designer of the Audio Physic speakers) this eliminates early reflection problems. But the room is small, and the sound is horrible at anything other than modest or low volume. I have room for bass traps in the corners, and perhaps I'll try fooling with a couple of strips of absorbers.
I'm collecting info for building a dedicated room in a corner of concrete basement. Translating the information in Everest's book into a step by step plan is alot of work. Does not appear to be much info available on "how I did it" formats. I'm surprised none of the entheuast magazines seem to have done a feature on this.
The problems I'm facing are: access to utilities like water valves, sewerage clean-out ports, water meteres; sound insulating ductwork, sewerage pipes, water pipes, and overhead floors without losing ceiling height; dampness --coping with sump pumps; adding de-humidifiers; building walls around furnaces, dealing with lolly columns (do you box them in a wall and make a smaller room, or leave them free-standing in a much larger room?); adding lighting--incadescent with it's heat problems, dimmers; or fluroescent with it's hummmmmmmming?; heating; cooling; access to rest of basement, making doorways air-tight; how to get lawnmowers and sno-throwers thru the listening room into the unfinished storage areas...etc...
And that's before you even consider absorbers, diffusors and traps.
Right now, I just want to know if I should drywall the bottom of the floor joists (ceiling) or just leave the fiberglass between the joists as an absorber, covered with burlap. Do you think this will be too much? or wouldn't this just be like having a much higher ceiling? Currently the ceiling height will be about 7ft 8 inches. What if I did both, but left slot openings in the drywall to act like Helmholtz resonators into the fiberglassed floor joist spaces above?
