I think I experienced what you're talking about. Since my room has a fireplace/hearth which juts out into the room, I had to put a panel above the fireplace (eg. between the speakers) in order to get the imaging right. When I then also placed 8-inch panels, like the ones pictured above, behind each speaker, the room got a little boomy. Replacing the behind-speaker panels with ones made only of 2-inch sheetrock and polyester batting fixed the problem nicely. Thank you, Jon, my room has never sounded better.
