Those ugly room treatments!

209.239.210.241

Hi everyone,

I went on a spree today and bought piles of insulation, polyester batting, hog wire, etc in hopes of making my own acoustic dampeners. The two wall panels I've made so far are freaking HUGE! and UGLY! Lemme explain:

I discovered R30 fiberglass insulation at Home Depot today--paper backed, 9 inch thick stuff! Jon Risch's recipe only calls for 6.5 or 8 inches for absorption down below 100 Hz. I suppose with 9 inches of the stuff I'm getting well below 100 Hz damping.

So, 9 inches by 2 ft wide by 4 ft tall, loosely wrapped (i.e. unprofessionally) in polyester batting, roughly tied with twine so it all doesn't fall apart, without the benefit of a cosmetic burlap outer covering, is quite dumpy looking.

They work quite well (when I stick my head next to one it feels like I've gone deaf in one ear) but JEEZUS! They're UGLY! And I plan to make MORE of these things? And tube traps also? What am I thinking?? My apartment will lose half of its livable volume! When people come over to visit and they see this stuff they're going to think I'm insane! Oh, wait a sec.
