generally agree with your conclusion however system matching is important with this preamp. The Cat is very clear, detailed and dymanic but can be a bit thin sounding in some systems. The only downside of the cat is its somewhat leanish character and lack of body and texture espically with its stock tubes if used. I now have Hovland preamp and perfer it to the Cat but if there was no Hovland and I wanted a excellent all around preamp with a phono stage the Cat would be at or near the top of the list. As with every piece of equipment they all have ther own unique signature and the Ultimate is no exception. If your system is already somewhat lean in character and lacks body there might be a better choice for system matching than the Cat. Otherwide a excellent tube preamp espically with good NOS tubes like the Amperex 6922 PQ 6922 and Amperex 12AX7 long plates. John
