A physiological explanation?

I'm surprised that no-one has suggested our old mate Fletcher-Munson as a possible cause, or as part of the cause.

The ear is non-linear and is less sensitive to both high and low frequencies at low volume. Increase the volume, which is what you're doing, and the ear becomes more sensitive to both high and low frequency sound as it's response curve becomes a little more linear, ie less roll-off at each end.

The difference may not be great, especially if the increase in volume is slight, but depending on your individual sensitivity to this change and just how much absorption you have in your room and how effective it is at higher frequencies where this change will be more pronounced, there may be enough of a change for you to interpret the result as increased brightness.
