Compression

Duke is astute, it may very well be compression.

Back when Don Keele used to do speaker tests in Audio magazine he tested for compression and generally woofers compressed before tweeters did, thus as such a speaker would get louder the tonal balance would change.

Compression is something most speaker makers and audiophiles don't want to talk about, a dirty little secret.
