They are better than the standard CD issues. The bonus tracks on "Straight Up" are exellent too, and I prefer them to the originals, all though I do go back and forth on "Name of the Game" and "Perfection".Those bonus tracks by the way were a sore point for the band, and I don't blame them. I mean, I love what Todd Rndgren did, but the bonus tracks were produced by the folks who did "No Dice", and I think they were on their way to creating a unique signature sound for the boys.
I forgot to mention in my first response what I thought of Pete Ham's vocals. Well, his singing was excellent. He had such a warm tenor, and the sincerety in his voice was arresting. It's not that overwrought, gut-wrenching crapola that passes for Pop singing these days. It's not subtle either. Oh no, it is obvious-make no mistake. It's earnest, really earnest....and it has that English Cool that for we Americans, helps keep things from going over board.
Also, and I think Quint would agree, Pete's vocals got better and better on each record. By the time of "Wish You Were Here", his range was impressive, and while not in the same league as Tom for going to the next octave, Pete was great. Besides, if Tom Evans was in your band, it would be pointless to match him.....unless you wanted your ass handed to you.
Give close listen to "Sweet Tuesday Morning". It's Joey's and it's beautiful. Pete's acoustic guitar work is frickin' perfect, and it is here where you'll hear that brittle, fragile quality I wrote of before. Again, that English Cool we Yanks love keeps it together.
