"Just found this out with new Iphone. lightning > usb C. IIRC."Yes. The Apple Lightning connector was very innovative and way ahead of it's time when it first appeared 13 years ago. Unlike the micro USB connector found on many phones of that era the Apple Lightning connector is reversible, meaning it can be plugged in either way w/o fumbling and trying to get the orientation correct. It also slides in/out much smoother than micro USB.
A couple years ago the European Union mandated that electronics all have a common connector type for charging which forced Apple's hand and they are now making iPhones with the USB-C style connector. It too is reversible and can be plugged in either way.
Apple still provides the innovative MagSafe connector on their laptops. These are secured magnetically so if you were trip over the charging cable the mag connector will release from the laptop instead of having it crash to the floor. BUT.... these MacBook laptops can ALSO be charged via their USB-C port - to keep the European Union happy.
P.S. The newer iPhones can also charge w/o cables similar to the Qi wireless charging system found on some Android phones. However, Apple has a magnetic ring inside the iPhone and on their wireless chargers so the charger and phone align perfectly and the iPhone can be propped up instead of having to lay flat on a charging pad. Qi2 offers magnetic coupling but not many Android phones have that capability just yet. To get around this, many phone cases for Android phones have a magnet on the back. One of many styles of MagSafe chargers for iPhone
This one also charges the Apple Watch and Apple ear buds (in the white case)
