RE: Quad 57 versus Quad 63 panels

I do know that my old boss who had the 57's then switched to 63's, that he wasn't satisfied with the level they produced when the spark gaps activated (protecting the speaker). The frequent "snap" could be irritating playing his classical music.

Back then I used to build flat panel Electrostatic speakers for fun and he asked me to "fix" his 63's by cutting out (one end) the spark gaps.
I was very hesitant, these were not inexpensive speakers and were far far out of my price range but i said ok.

I had them home and clipped the spark gaps and thought wow, that is an interesting design. I think one would call it a synthesized array point source made from several rings driven with slight delays starting at the center. And then i spent the next two evenings listening to them, eventually ending up on the floor in front of them.

Unlike all the panels i had built both flat and slightly curved, these made a different (smaller vertical image) and stronger stereo image. Listening to one at a time, at times it sounded like the sound was coming from somewhere behind the radiator and it dawned on me then that one can hear aspects of how sound is radiated.
This speaker radiated like a single point over a broad frequency range producing the wavefront of a small point source sitting some distance behind the radiator..
It was goose bumps, sitting on the floor at about 6 feet listening to my favorite music, that experience changed my "theoretical target" in loudspeakers.
Several months later my old boss Roy, reported that both speakers were dead.

Seeking them to go lower or louder than they "can" would be the cause of death by user most often is my guess, it IS certainly what killed 100% of all the ones i made haha.
