Ratios of direct sound to reflected sound, for me, is the most important factor in a good sounding system...

In a two-channel system, this has much more to do with room acoustics than ultra high resolution recordings. I'm happier using low-rez recordings in a proper physical environment than I am with hi-rez recordings in a lousy physical environment.

Get the timing of musical sounds as close as possible to "right" and recordings will seem most lifelike. Audiophiles fool themselves about this, if/when they think they can cheat Father Time.

After extensive experimentation with room treatments and speaker positioning in my two-channel system, I eventually came to the conclusion that the "timing" of sounds reaching my ears was the most important factor in perceived audio quality.

Multi-channel listening using good MC recordings would be the better way to reproduce music in the most timely manner. My experiments with acoustic treatments suggest that this must in fact be true, but I have not delved into MC and probably never will.

Last time I checked, I had excellent hearing for my age. Nice to know, but I have always doubted that hearing acuity was the most important factor in recognizing lifelike sound in a sound system.
