I have been out of this particular loop for quite a few years, but...

John Atkinson, Bob Saglio, and I had Peak Life Experiences when Mark Wilder invited us into his studio to hear the unedited backup safety master tapes of Kind of Blue (link). So, we heard the session chatter.

Those tapes had to come from literally a secret underground location well away from Manhattan... in the event Manhattan gets nuked.

I have no idea whether the original, in-machine prime master tapes (or the safeties) are lent out for audiophile remastering, and in any event Side A is off-speed, as I recall.

And I also dimly recall that the original, in-machine prime master tapes and also the safeties are three-channel, so the original LPs always had to be cut from an intermaster 2-channel analog tape.

It was either Aristotle or Augustin (or, perhaps both of them) who decreed that if something sounds good, it is good.

OK, I made up that part.

I am open to the possibility that HDTT's product, even if it was derived from a commercially-available RTR tape (just like my long-lost RTR tape of The Mystic Moods Orchestra's "Stormy Weekend") could have had some tweaks in the remastering process that make it, at least to some listeners, more engaging than a flat transfer from an earlier-generation tape.

I've always wondered BTW whether good-time girl Stormy Daniels borrowed her nom de porn from the Mystic Moods Orchestra... but I digress.
