And most were highly memorable -* A private Chopin piano recital for a group of 20 in Warsaw by a music professor (reflecting the struggling economy in Poland that a professor found the need to do this)
* A Mozart orchestral performance in Vienna - rather kitch & disappointing with very ordinary playing
* A brilliant folk performance in St Peterburg by Naigrysh, the best of its type ever seen & illustrating how unecessary amplified sound is
* "Das Rheingold" under Gergiev - odd staging but excellent singing by all except Algerich
* Another folk group, Saravay, in a restaurant
* Electrifying a capella singing in a church & in an old manastery by two Russian groups - "Anima" & "Doros". The latter group sang "Song of the Volga Boatmen" - the bass had a magnificent voice.
I have CDs, sold at the event (the main reason for their free performances) of most of the above.
And yes, I almost forgot, we attended a performance of "Giselle" at the Bolshoi. Wish I had had more time (and dollars) to have sampled more live, unamplified music. Australia is a great place to live with Tasmania the pick of it but where I live is a real backwater for worthwhile music. Melbourne & Sydney fare much better. But, being so far from the rest of the world is a real pain & expense to get anywhere like Europe or the US so the above events are a rare occurrance for me :-(
