I saw a jazz trio show with a guest saxophonist Wednesday night. The upright bass was using a mic and small amp, but it blended perfectly with the other instruments. The location was a small recital hall at the University of Richmond. It was a short show, ~70 minutes, but the performance was outstanding. These were older gentlemen, not students, the pianist of which is an adjunct faculty member.I cannot recommend enough that people pursue free or low-cost performances at local colleges/universities. Student performances (Jazz Ensembles) are usually free. The most I have paid so far was $10 at Virginia Commonwealth University for a classical guitar recital by a former VCU student. The best part about these types of shows is that there are no talking patrons, no glasses banging around, and best of all no smoke. Everyone is there to listen to the music. Give it a shot, people!!
