a 1000$ CDP or DAC, with an organic sound and deep soundstage (to tame my forward-sounding speakers)

Hi,
after many weeks of waiting, some parts of my new system are in a full action.
I have ATC SCM 20 ASL Pro speakers (older version with Vifa tweeter), coupled with Cary SLP98L preamp (early stock model, no upgrades). The connecting cable is some cheap braided Kimber (can't remember the model, used to be a popular budget option in the late 90s).
When using a cheapo (50$, 3 years ago) DVD player Pioneer DV370, the sound is suprisingly OK, it's detailed, the timbre is right, everything sounds pretty natural and organic.
The main shortcoming is a forwardness of the sound. I have a feeling there is too much energy in the upper mids so there is a bit of shouting effect, however due to extremely high quality of preamp and speakers it doesn't sound unpleasent as one might expect. It is just there but it doesn't induce headache. I think this goes to ATCs or maybe cables.
The bass is also a bit warmish, could be a little tighter. This might be Cary.
So right now I am looking for a digital source option to change my temporary DVD solution.
The main goals are to get the most organic and naturally sounding source within 1000$ used or new. It should have ability to produce a deep soundstage - right now there is too much of it just in your face. It is not essential to be particularly detailed.
I am thinking of something like Rega Apollo, Quad CDS99 (i actually don't need all the options of CDP II - do they otherwise sound the same) or maybe some DAC to play with some cheap universal player (maybe my Pioneer DV 370 or similar)... Audio Note One.x Signature or similar. How's about all these new DACs coming for East, Zhaolu or D02 or...? I just wouldn't love to employ some restless studio device that is all about digital detail and definition and has a little juice and life.
Also I would appreciate your recommendations for a reasonably priced interconnect for the CDP-preamp and the preamp-active speakers connection.
I have no money for Ayre CDP. I know this would be perfect choice.
Please excuse me being so detailed but I thought that my case needs a bit of intro.
I am also wondering if Rega Apollo loading time problems deterior with time - I can buy it used& 10 months old for 550USD and I am tempted. Is used Rega Apollo something to think about at all?
Looking forward to hear your thoughts.
