Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Re: HDCD discs...

<< Some are from Reference Recordings (Dick Hyman) so I assume they take full advantage of the HDCD process >>

I would assume so as well.

<< Though probably not a fair comparison, they sound night-and-day different (inferior) when played on a $300 Pioneer DVD player through the same system as my HDCD player ($2250). >>

The proof is, as they say, in the pudding. I can pretty much guarantee that every single thing on the expensive player (clock, DAC chip, digital filter, power supply, analog circuitry, etc.) is implemented at a much higher level on the HDCD player than the Pioneer DVD player. How much improvement is due to HDCD decoding? Hard to say for sure. One idea would be to compare the relative improvement on HDCD discs vis-a-vis the relative improvement on non-HDCD discs.

Another idea would be to get a hold of (say) an Ayre CX-7e for a home demo and compare it to your current HDCD player. Comparing both HDCD and non-HDCD discs would give you an idea of how much would be giving up by not having HDCD decoding available.
