If the discs were recorded with a high-resolution format before being transferred to CD *and* actually made with the "Peak Extend" and/or "Low-Level Extend" features turned on at the mastering studio, then they would sound better if decoded *if* all else is equal (which it never is).

One of the biggest advantage of HDCD discs is that they used a really good sounding A/D converter. This advantage is available for all CD players. The best thing to do is use your HDCD discs as test discs when auditioning new players. You might be surprised at good they sound, even on non-HDCD players.
