RE: Hum appears out of nowhere on vintage integrated amp (all functions): is it toast/repairable ($...)?

I would ask the tech for an estimate. If you like the sound of the amp in your application, it might be worth the cost to replace some or all electrolytic caps (and clean all the controls while he's in there). As someone else said already, any vintage amp is likely to require service eventually. Changing horses may not get you anywhere.

My experience with one Sony of this era has been very positive. I have the TA-1144 in regular service in a small library setup driving Dynaco A-25's and really like the sound.

Good luck and keep us posted!
