I don't believe I've ever heard an Onkyo like the one you've mentioned, but I have owned and loved a Pioneer SX-727. It was quite robust - very large and heavy considering its somewhat modest power output. It had a plethora of connections available, as well as many connection formats (RCA and DIN connectors) and some unusual speaker connections. You may need the adapter pieces to connect speaker cable to the speaker terminals - if memory serves, the connection on the back of the receiver had a pair of slots; one vertical, one horizontal, and there was a mating plastic plug with terminal screws on the back side for wire.
I loved the sound of the SX-727; wish I'd kept it. I had a couple of receivers at the time; miscommunication about which one was to be donated and which kept led to the unfortunate departure of the Pioneer.
