Re: Cleaning 'tuning fins'? Or ...

The movable fins are mounted onto a shaft, where this shaft passes thru the frame are wipers to make electrical contact with a groove in the shaft. These moving contact points may oxidize & require contact cleaner. The best way to apply cleaner here is via a small artist brush transferring a drop to the contact wiper instead of direct spray, as over-spray can clog & short fins to adjacent fins. If the cleaner had lubricants as portion of the formulation, those lubricants can attract dust in the future & create fin-to-fin shorts. Delicate fins are closely spaced with non-movable interacting fins in the base; there should always be an air-gap between every fin of each of these differing sets of fins. Physical scrubbing could very easily mis-align fins such that shorts occur at some point in the rotation; a minor short might only throw off the tuning similar to a minor rotation of the knob & show up either across the dial or @ intemittant spots. Inspect fins via a flashlight & reading magnifier lens (available inexpensively at local drug counters).
