Respectfully, incoming signal strength as 'measured' by the MD SS meter has no corelation to volume settings or system current draw. That connection just doesn't make sense.Why it would decline (tho' you don't say by how much) over time I have no idea. However, AM stations AFAIK, can and do adjust transmission power depending on time of day; decreasing at night. I have no idea about FM transmission.
Others disagree, but I find the SS meter to be so crudely calibrated to be of any use. Tuning my indoor antennae by ear is how I do it, and find very little change in SS readings. The upper limit of '8' (to prevent meter damage by 'pegging') is a design mystery to me.
The meter needs auto-ranging capabilities, like any decent DVM.
