My suggestion is minimalist and really good, but unfortunately, it ain't cheap: A Cyrus Tuner and separate Cyrus CD Player, but when I look at the photo's you posted, the Cyrus products may be a bit wider. Cyrus products are about the size of adult shoe boxes.

FWIW, Cyrus products generally get rave reviews (one of the UK reviews considers it to be one of the best-sounding CD players, ever) in both the US and UK publications and I've not read any complaints about long-term reliability issues with Cyrus - The concensus from both the US and the UK is that they are very well built.

So I guess you pays your money and takes your chances ;-)
