Hi, jcmusic:Sounds like you found a real WINNER! Sansui tuners are nicely made and generally sound good, as found.
I certainly do hope that the sound you witnessed was "almost like CD quality". It should be FAR BETTER than CD quality, but consider that most of what is being heard over the air these days comes from CD-based, i.e., 44.1 kHz 16 bit sampled source material. The exception would be a live musical broadcast, I would hope.
In the old days of "pre-digital" recording, if you owned a Marantz 10-B, or any other fine tube tuner and you dialed in a live, well-engineered broadcast, you were in for a real treat. Nice bandwidth, hardly any compression or limiting and very nice sound.
Then, things changed, not exactly and not always for the better!
I have great old open reel recordings which I made straight off of some local FM broadcasts over thirty years ago. It astonishes me when I realize how well engineered those broadcasts were way back when!
How times have changed, indeed!
