Actually, audio bandwidth was lost, when MPX stereo became available. Mono FM was/is capable of playing 20 KHz. info. The use of the 19 KHz. stereo pilot caused the audio limit to drop to 15 KHz. The broadcast bandwidth slot size did not change, instead it was "sliced" up differently.
BTW, old, analog, NTSC TV had mono FM's 20 KHz. audio capability.
