Sounds like a bad cam belt. Does it take particularly long to start playing when you hit play? (like more than 2 seconds) The mechanism has to move even farther for record mode so the cam belt may be loose, slipping or it may be frozen so it can't go past the play position. If you take the bottom plate off you can see a white wheel about and inch around with the belt attached to it that goes to the cam motor. Open it up and see what happens when you hit play, rr, ff etc.
