RE: Nakamichi LX-3

Had the opposite problem with mine when I got it (cheap)- it would continuously record, but would not disengage for playback! as a result, it killed a few tapes (even those with the erase tabs removed!)...

It turned out to be worn belts, and some mis-adjusted mechanical stuff inside. If you know enough about decks, you can get in there and replace everything. Its been about 5 years since I had the top off mine, but it has functioned flawlessly since.
