RE: too much gain between preamp and amp. how best toremedy?

This is just armchair speculation; I haven't tried it. The tube preamp is happiest with a high impedance load. You can't just stick a voltage divider in there and satisfy both the preamp and power amp. I'd consider a 2:1 or 4:1 interstage transformer. That would better match the pre to the power amp, converting "too much voltage at a high impedance" to "the right voltage at a lower impedance". Possibly your techs can see what's available that might fit the bill.
