voltage doublers etc use stored charges to deliver their power, thus rely on a discharging cap to power the output.
This results in a high impeadance supply, hence limited current delivery and high ripple currents. All bad.
A whopping tran'y low impedance high current delivery and very low riple current if the psu section is well designed. All good.
