1. Isolation - the transformer acts as a filter getting rid of a lot of junk coming down the AC line. It also fixes ground loop problems, and keeps noise getting dumped back into the AC mains.2. Safety - if your AC powered electronic widget has an improper chasis ground setup, or picky hot/neutral polarity setup, it keeps you from killing yourself if you touch the case when it's hot.
