Re: Marantz 10B help

If you decide to have your 10B serviced, be most careful. The 10B is no ordinary tuner and a "shop" is not what you should use. There used to be some one (I'm sorry I cannot remember his name) on Staten Island who used to work for Marantz and when the company was taken over by Superscope, he bought the test equipment used by Marantz for the 10B.

Switching from Stereo to Mono will lower the noise level in any FM tuner. The Signal to Noise figure is 20(?) dB better in Mono.

The CRT display trace is determined by voltages derived within the RF and IF stages. So, if it is the tuner that is at fault, then you have a lot of territory to consider. But clearly the first thing to do is check the antenna and its connections. Try using another FM tuner. Does it perform poorly?

Whatever you do, don't fool around inside the tuner. Trying replacement tubes is something you can do (if you can get the tubes. I believe that it is not easy to get the IF tubes). As has been suggested, note carefully which tube was in which position. In spite of some claims to the contrary, the 10B is not completely insensitive to the characteristics of a replacement tube. And that is where there is a potential service problem. If a tube is replaced, any tuning readjustment needed should be done by someone who really, really, knows what they are doing with 10Bs.

I hope you get your 10B working well again. It's a beautiful machine.

Bill
