Good tip. Private auctions also are dangerous because they prevent people from warning the high bidder that a scam in taking place. I've seen a private auction that copied word-for-word the item descriptions and pictures from an auction that closed *less than an hour* after the private auction went up. The scammer had some balls.The private auction scams often require some payment to a non-U.S. point (Europe, Canada, Asia) by Western Union, money order or other funds hard to track or get back. In the example I'm thinking of, the item description copied said paypal was acceptable, which contracted the payment methods checked for the private auction. The scammer was getting bang for his effort.
These private auction scams happen almost daily on auctions for Gibson '59 Reissue Les Paul guitars, which can fetch up to $4K or $5K for ones with certain looks and wood. If you start looking at the listings for these guitars, over time you'll soon start to notice duplicate entries that look familiar ...
That Eliot Spitzer's (from the linked article) got some sweet political career ahead of him. He's taken on everyone from investment banks to ebay shrill bidders.
Spitzer is also looking into modern payola on radio, which I posted about some time back. In the modern radio payola scam, consultants pay radio stations for the right to look over their playlists and suggest which songs he thinks are "hot" and should be moved (and the radio stations usually follow the "advice"). Of course, the "consultant" is picking songs based on whichever radio station is paying him that week to go around the promote their songs. This was mentioned in the recent book, "So You Want To Be a Rock & Roll Star" by the drummer in Semisonic about his experiences being in the band. I wonder if some US Attorney read the book and decided to pursue it.
