Buying used, you can sell it for what you paid for it and modding it will not be as big of a financial issue.
In general, toroidal output transformers do not overload as gracefully as conventional transformers. When pushed they can get a glare, but used within their limits they are acceptable. (no one can hear 100kHz).
Expect most amps from china are using a extremely poor quality output transformers under the shiny covers, along with counterfeit parts.
