Reasoning

My reasoning is simply:

1. There are many "audiophile" labels left, which go extra lengths to produce quality recordings
2. If there was some process that would dramatically improve the sound of their products, these labels, if anyone, would employ it
3. I don't see any labels using cryogenics on their CD's, at least they don't advertise that they do

Audiophile labels have little to do with traditional, "mass market" record labels.

> A DVD disc has more than enough space for 24/96 or even 192kHz audio.

True, but high-res audio isn't what drives DVD sales. If anything, it's an afterthought to the format. If the primary reason behind the format (digital video) is flawed somehow (not enough space for it) the format will not last long.

> Both formats are significantly superior to CD.

Superior is relative, and there are many variables there. Is it the same increase in convenience, quality and reliability from CD to SACD than from, say, LP to CD? Most would argue no, and this is coming from a vinyl junkie.

When I listen to CD's, I'm impressed with their superior channel seperation and amazingly low noise floor, and soon get a headache from something in digital audio that makes the treble sound harsh to me (high freq. DAC aliasing?) I compare a CD with SACD, and I don't notice a huge difference. The treble sounds a bit smoother, but now I can't rip it (losslessly) and put it on my iPod, or make a backup copy. Not worth dumping my CD's, or my huge record collection, and switching up. It seems most consumers agree with me.

> HD-DVD and Blu Ray address only the problem of high resolution video and ignore the audio portion

They are just physical storage formats, manufacturers are free to get together and put whatever data they want on them. I'm sure MLP and/or DSD is on it's way to one or the other.
