RE: I, too, appreciate college radio

By "DRM" I just meant "Digital Rights Management". That would have been important in your situation if you had instead bought your music on iTunes and then wanted to play it. In that case you would have had to stream it from your computer. But if it is just ripped as one of the recognized music files (mp3, flac, wma standard, wav, aiff, aac/m4a (nonprotected), Ogg, and others) then you can listen straight to it.

I looked at the manual and the maximum size card that can work is 32 GB. they say "SD" but nowadays it is all "SDHC" at that size and they seem to work fine. There are different "Classes" of memory cards but I do not think that they have to be high class to work. There is a 32 GB SDHC available for less than fifty dollars (32 GB flash usb thumb drives are about the same). Both get lots cheaper with less storage.

What is the size of your music collection? Go to it through "my computer" and right click "properties" of the folder where Media Monkey stored it and you can see the size of the folder. You can also then click down to a song and right click the properties and see what file type it is. Once you have the GB size of your collection, you can see what percent of your collection you can put on the SD card or usb thumb drive. But the SD card never worked as well as my stand alone USB hard drive does and I think it has to do with the fact that the squeezebox is writing new files while it is reading and you need a lot of empty space on the storage device. In fact, I consider the SD card a failure in my situation because I had it so full. But my wife has the identical SD card (32GB) and only 8 GB on it and the performance is awesome. The major difference in selecting the amount of music to put on the card is that I selected albums I should listen to and she selected ones she would listen to. A subtle but important difference in logic. ("Smarter than the man in everyway. That's right. The women are smarter." That song will be in my head the rest of the day.)

A good thing about the SD card is that they tend to accumulate around the house. I have them in digital cameras, my all-in-one printer, etc. I just find them unused in drawers. You may have one sitting somewhere.

I did not want to use the USB thumb drive since I was certain that I would knock the device over, snap off the drive and leave part of the thumb drive inside or worse, rip out the innards of the squeezebox. Just that sort of ox in the china shop type guy.

The manual at Logitech and the forums there are also very good about the minutia of the device. The forums are actually monitored by service reps from the company which is better than most company forums.
