Would a great-sounding playback engine benefit from removing UI component? Certainly - but that's not an option with majority of players (JPlay is one exception I'm aware of).Would a great-sounding playback engine, hampered by UI overhead, sound worse than a stripped-down mediocre one? Not in my experience. I'd bet JRiver or Foobar would still sound mediocre, even if their developers implemented separation of the two.
The hardware/OS platform is extremely important, of course, and is the first step to ensure highest SQ possible. If you start with something as rigid/inflexible/non-modifiable as Mac, for instance - then separating playback engine from UI, or any amount of fiddling with remote control software, won't lift SQ above merely middle-of-the-road.
