RE: OK, so which sound card?

The Juli@ has a decent spdif output, especially if you connect it direct to the pulse transformer with a 75R BNC socket. You can detach the analog section and just use the small digital board. You can power this separately later if you so wish. There are plenty of posts especially by Greg here. The negative side is that my sample of the digital section sits a bit loose on the PCI connector in my computer and you have to be careful.

Asus cards used to resample 88.2 k and 176.4k files. They have a 'gamer' style interface and the one I has sounded rather 'hifi'.

Audiophile card? I personally avoid their products. There are some posts here about resampling and software issues.

The best thing to do is to for SQ is to relock all PC spdif outputs before your dac.

I am afraid that things are not straightforward as it is often made out to be.
