Source? Well known that Toshlink does not work reliably above 96k.
I have measured the waveforms coming out of Toshlink connections at 96k, and they are not good, often with slow risetimes and mishaped wave shapes.
Sure, they will make a sound at 96k and it may suit you. But for waveform integrity, no.
