Some additional thoughts

Mike is generally correct, however, in my experience, balanced interconnect cables are
susceptible to RFI. Perhaps not as much as single ended, but still an issue if you have a
local RF source, such as a satellite or cable TV converter. It is best just to switch such things
off and disconnect AC power from them for serious listening.

This is a subtle issue, and a possible major one would be proximity to steel. If the
interconnect, speaker, or power cables pass close to steel rack frame members or other
items, they can add a hard, bright quality to the sound. Not guaranteed that they will, as it
depends on the magnetic properties of the specific steel article. Even the galvanized steel
outlet box and ground strap on common (US/Canadian) duplex outlets can contribute. The
steel components in most XLR connectors, used for balanced cables, also can add a
hardness to the sound.

To explore these possible problems, simply acquire a strong ceramic magnet or two, and
place them near suspect articles. If the sound changes, even if it gets worse, that means the
steel article is interacting with the signal's magnetic field and adding distortion.
