John,A couple of thoughts:
1. Are the Merlins new or have they had a few hundred hours of playing time to break in? If new, give them time to break in.
2. If the Merlins are well broken in, consider the input tubes on the A-S. The input tubes will make a difference in the sound; some 6SN7s can be pretty ugly sounding. You say you can't read the writing on the tubes, so it sounds like someone replaced the stock tubes with some vintage tubes in an effort to improve the sound (sure, I've done it with my amps, too!), but there may be an issue with the tubes. When the A-S staff is back from vacation, consider contacting them for their suggestions; at a minimum you might try purchasing two stock input tubes per amp for the critical gain stage positions and see if that impacts the sound positively. The stock tubes may not as good as some vintage tubes, but they are listenable tubes.
