Re: novel diodes in Atma amps

I too have wondered whether TV damper diodes are simply miniaturized tube type rectifiers; I
have never seen one. But since they are being re-manufactured in Eastern Europe, this makes
me think they are tube-type. Re the use of chokes in the LV supply to the circlotron output
circuit, this was a bone of contention between Ralph and the late Harvey Rosenberg. Harvey
wrote a very favorable review of the M60 in Positive Feedback and then came back later to write
that the amp was not so good until he personally installed chokes in the LV supply. Ralph was
not a big fan of this mod, to put it mildly. I adopted Paul Speltz' compromise solution to improve
filtration in the LV supply without introducing a choke, using very low value Rs between banks of
capacitance. (See Paul's Tweaks section.) One ends up with a CRCRC, etc filter, where values of
R = 0.5ohms and less. One advantage of this set up is to use lower values of C nearer to the
bridge rectifiers, so that there is less stress on them at switching (a lower value capacitor to fill
up with charge). I for example have a 2000uF cap for the first C and much higher values
downstream. Notwithstanding the placebo effect, I think I noticed a big improvement in base
response and in lower noise floor with Paul's tweak.
