Re: 6C33 - the cooler alternative?

Good question, Andy.

The MA-1 amps dissipate about 500 watts each. This is a kilowatt for the pair, and the heat input to our 15X19 listening room raises the temperature by about 2 to 3 degrees F in an hour. This is an important consideration on summer days when we have to close up the house and preserve the morning coolness as long as possible. We do not have air conditioning here because the really hot days are limited to a couple of weeks in the summer. On the other hand, the extra heat given off by the amps is welcome in the winter.

Our previous house in Phoenix had air conditioning, and the air-handling part of it was so noisy that it took all pleasure out of listening when it operated. Of course, the climate in Phoenix requires cooling for about six months of the year, so there it did not matter how much heat the amplifiers produced: the air conditioning would have operated anyway.

I don't think the choice of 6C33 versus 6AS7 should depend on your domestic heating and cooling situation. If the heat is that much of a problem, you probably don't want class A amplifiers in the first place. The difference in tube heater efficiency is small relative to the choice of amplifier class.
