It's quite likely that the new modification to the backplate as espoused by Sound Labs and Dr.West will be a superior cure for the "impedance problem" vs Kevin's earlier work. Indeed, one could start with the new hi-pass filter design and then apply Kevin's approach to make it even better. I don't know whether Kevin has incorporated the Sound Lab tweak yet or had a chance to make impedance vs frequency curves for the new circuit. The most effective cure for Kevin with the original circuit was finally bi-amplifying the speaker, one amp for each of the two audio transformers. Since my amps are huge, excellent, and not duplicatable (meaning I don't have the funds or the patience or the space to do it), I am reluctant to go THAT far. BTW, it's a little confusing to call the Sound Lab mod a "new backplate". It's really a modification of the hi-pass filter that precedes the toroidal treble transformer. By adding an inductor in parallel with the toroid and changing some resistor values, the amplifier sees a higher impedance at the x-over point. Nothing else changes. But by all accounts, this helps OTLs greatly to drive the mid-range. I am anxious to try it.
