I tried the 6SL7 in the CCS position of my MA-1s a couple of weeks ago upon Mark's suggestion, and upon locating a few at Radio Electric Supply in Florida. I received a couple branded Motorola and with a dull grey spatter coating inside the envelope completely surrounding the works, but not on the tops. I also got a couple branded RCA, some with and one (with later date code) without this coating. BTW, does anyone know what this coating is, and who actually made the tubes? The RCA and Motorola look identical as far as I can see past the coating. There was a definite sonic improvement with the 6SL7. The treble seems firmer and more life-like. This improvement is similar in magnitude, but different in quality, to that from using Tung-Sol 6SN7 in the driver position in place of, say, NOS GE. The tubes are cheaper and reduce the consumption of 6SN7. My MA-1s are located directly behind my Magnepan MG-20s, so microphonics do not seem to be an issue with this vintage.
If anyone locates a large, cheap stash of these 6SL7, please share with the group.
