Yes. Yes. Joni Mitchell is great and could have had a great career as a jazz specialist, but she probably would not have made nearly as much money. Have you heard her sing "The Man I Love" on the Gershwin tribute CD? (I think Herbie Hancock is on the cover.) Actually, that whole CD is another sonic spectacular with top notch musicians throughout. Absolutely terrific.
Now, as for your contention that vocalists cannot be real jazz musicians: poppycock, sir! Listen to Louis Armstrong sing some time and realize that what he is doing vocally was NEVER done before he did it. Then consider how his innovative style formed the basis for bebop. When you hear him (and Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, etc) now, it's hard to keep in mind that they were jazz pioneers, because their once-novel techniques have been so thoroughly incorporated into the music by both instrumentalists and vocalists. A true jazz singer must also be a consummate musician and interact WITH the instrumentalists in that capacity. They do and did exist.
