I was reading the review of the Patricia Barber "If this isn't jazz..." CD last night in S'phile (someone gave me a copy, honest), and the irony of that title in light of my posting did not escape me. I probably overstated my own opinion. I only own the very first Patricia Barber CD, on which she sings many of her own compositions plus a very few tunes that strike me as "jazzy" (e.g., the aforementioned rendtion of "The Thrill is Gone"). The CD IS a sonic spectacular, but the music leaves me cold. From what I read, this newer CD may be more to my liking. I freely confess to being a traditionalist cornball when it comes to my first love in music. I'm partial to Miles, Dizzy, Duke, Ella, Sarah, Thelonius, etc., and to re-interpretations of the work of the great Broadway composers, along with the original compositions of these greats, aka, "standards". And, I put my money where my mouth is by taking jazz singing lessons and occasionally performing in public. I find much of "modern" jazz to be not so appealing. But the essence of jazz is that a rigid definition should elude us. (This does NOT mean that Kenny G is entitled to call himself a jazz artist.) But perhaps I was too rough on P Barber. I'll buy the new CD and give it a listen. (I do think she has a nice voice.)
