Man, you guys don't miss a thing! The long axis of the ellipse should extend deeper into the top left and bottom right corners. If you actually built the panel as pictured, you'd wind up with an off-center ellipse crowding the top right side of the panel instead of an 8" circle. An oval 9" autosound speaker might fit then. Perhaps this drafting gaff inspired the later Dinsdale horn articles in Wireless World ; )
