Nice to see a thread when I need some experienced advice
I recently bought a pair of Duos, and set up is very complex
Right now I use a 30W EL34 pushpull amp, that has given excellent results with all speakers (Ars Sonum Filarmonia)
I can listen from 10 to 20 feet away
the room ceiling is low, around 7 feet high
My main problems concern to alignment and phase
I´ve seen that people usually recommends to put the mid and tweeter horns on top of their positions, that is, the top hole (of the five available)
when I do that, the sound comes shouty, and I can only get some neutral tone lowering the tweeter by one hole
but even then the sound is somewhat thin
also, raising the mid horn to the top hole makes sound thinner in the lower mids, more detail, but thinner.
If I lower too much the mid horn, some colorations appear in the mids
My low ceiling (7´) may have something to do here, I should put some absorver, but I´d like to be 100% sure before breaking the the room aesthetics (and lower the ceiling even more, it would be very low for the eye)
Is there any experience with avantgarde duos and low ceilings?
I´ve seen some advices about raising the back of the speakers so the drivers point downwards to the listener, but this way the listening distance becomes critical, there is only one good distance for propor integration
there is also the rule to see the front mid horn lower extreme aligned with the back of the tweeter enclosure, but that´s impossible to do if mid and tweeter horns are one hole down to each other (when the mid is placed on top hole and the tweeter on second higher hole)
about phase/polarity, as the tweeter is wired with oppposite polarity, imaging is very strange, it dances around the center and the sides, something like "in/out of phase" dance
and if I wire the tweeter with the same polarity with the mids, sound becomes a bit aggresive in the crossover zone
this is turning me nuts
is there any solution?
PS: about mids/bass integration, I prefer to wire the woofers in phase, due to the "imaging dance"
