I have a pair of Hifiman open-back planar Sundara headphones that I really enjoy. However, recently decided to get a set of closed-back headphones as the open-back headphones can bother my wife if we are close by. So, I picked up a pair of Sennheiser HD569s -- got a factory refurbished pair for $69 from Sennheiser proper instead of their normal $149. Sound is quite nice -- smooth response with good bass, and a very comfy fit. Great headphones, especially at the price I paid for them. That said, I do prefer my Sundaras.
I also picked up a pair of Hifiman HE400se headphones along with a EF499 headphone amp. The EF499 was 20% off if you bought a pair of headphones, so I picked up an open-box pair of the headphones for $89. The total was just a few bucks more than the EF499 at its regular price. It makes for a nice combo -- the EF499 is a great headphone amp with a built-in DAC, so I'm currently feeding it with a RPi/pCP streamer via USB. The headphones are good, but certainly second place to the Sundaras -- still a good deal for half the list price of the Sundara and I got them a lot cheaper than that. I do suspect I'll end up selling the HE400se phones in the near future.
In short, there are some pretty good headphones out there at fantastic prices, especially if you don't mind open-box or refurb products.
